Barichara was the refuge of the Guanes, indigenous people who once occupied the Colombian territory. After the invasion of the Spaniards, the passage of the Guanes is only a story to be told, except that their cultures are still visible in the village.
The merit of Barichara lies in the famous legend of the miraculous stone. After the Virgin Mary appeared on a stone in the early 18th century, the local farmers decided to build a church. It was only afterwards that a captain of the Spanish army decided to erect the village of Barichara in 1705.
Barichara is known as the most beautiful village in Colombia. Indeed, its colonial houses with whitewashed walls, its mythical cathedral, its cobblestone streets and its surrounding tranquility are all obvious reasons that make its magic and charm of Barichara.

Declared a Colombian Heritage City, the city is aptly named because its name means “place of rest” in the Guanese dialect, the indigenous people who used to live in the area. It is a place of tranquility, silence, and peace, away from the frenetic pace and stress of the big Colombian cities. This break will go even beyond the simple rest. All our senses will be awakened thanks to its incredible landscapes, its gastronomy or its mild climate all year round.
Barichara, village of stone
This stone forms the backbone of the houses, the streets and the cathedral. It has shaped the entire village of Barichara and made its reputation. Here are reputed to live among the best stone cutters of all Colombia. And even though this stone can be found in almost every historical center in Santander, Barichara remains the best preserved village in the region.

The stone is so emblematic of Barichara that the inhabitants have been called “patiamarillos”, the “yellow feet”, due to the ochre color of this earth whose dust invades everything and colors even the shoes of the inhabitants!
The village is built on the side of the mountain and its sloping streets make your calves warm, but also your cameras! This topography confers to Barichara a very particular photogeny with impressive perspectives. When we go up on the heights of the village, the spectacle is grandiose between these sublime paved streets and the surrounding mountain landscape.
It is really a sublime village and indeed certainly one of the most beautiful of Colombia, no doubt about it. In addition to the magnificent streets of the village and the inhabitants are of a great kindness.
